A King’s ransom for the King’s Jumpsuit: Stage-worn Peacock outfit, $300,000 PDF Print E-mail

Up until Aug. 7, the most money ever paid for an Elvis Presley collectible was $295,000, and that was for the King’s 1956 Lincoln Continental Mark II. That record is now history, as a person identified simply as “a huge Elvis fan” paid $300,000 for the unbearably stylish Peacock jumpsuit you see here.

It was auctioned by Gotta Have It! Auctioneers, and it is one of the great all-time pieces of rock clothing. Evidently, the jumpsuit was Elvis’s favorite in the waning years of his life. It even appeared, on the King, on the cover of his Promised Land album, an unremarkable recording of other people’s songs – only Chuck Berry’s title track and the Waylon Jennings/Billy Joe Shaver tune, You Asked Me To – stand out on the album. As a side note, it’s an important album in that it was recorded at the legendary Stax recording studios – Booker T. and The MGs, anyone? – and was the last Elvis recording done in Memphis, where it all began for him.

Back to the story, though, and the jumpsuit. It’s a beauty, as you can see, made by famed costume designer Bill Belew, with that blue and gold embroidered Peacock spanning the length and the back of the thing. It’s no wonder Elvis loved it so.

Personally, I think the jumpsuit belongs in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, where it can be seen by the most people. Who knows if it will end up in Cleveland. I guess it all depends who the buyer is, and whether they can fit into it or not. It looks like it would fit a guy my size, give or take a few dozen pounds – I don’t mean to brag, but I’m at 163 right now – so if you’re out there, phantom buyer, call me.

For the record, the previous record for an Elvis costume at auction was for the awesome Aloha Cape, seen on one of Elvis’s last TV shows. It went for $105,250.

I do love this jumpsuit, and I am glad that Elvis enjoyed it so much before his death. I do have to say that it’s not from my favorite period of Elvis the musician. That would have to be the late 1950s, early 1960s rockabilly Elvis. His voice was at its best, and he was at his most musically earnest.
